Artwork
Memento Mori
The skull represents the concept of death while the faceless girl is embracing the skull. It is symbolic of this idea of accepting death. The green circle is used to capture the audience's attention to the skull.
Crafting Death
This is a piece of scartchboard art. I believe that we are living a step closer to our own death every day. I corporate the characteristic of scratchboard with the idea of death. We are scratches off our makeup to reveal our true self beneath.
The Smile of Death
When skeleton and death are often associated with sadness, I want to change those connotations with my art piece. This is also draw with graphite.
Death and Education
This is a graphite drawing. We seldom receive any death education inside a classroom. Through this drawing, I want to prove that skeleton can go with textbooks, death education is necessary to be discussed.
Recreation of "All is Vanity"
During the winter break, I have come across this one painting "All is Vanity" by C. Allan Gilbert, a widely published drawing (memento mori). I think that this drawing is really interesting and I decided to recreate the piece with a touch of Chinese traditional style. Lastly, I put a black and white filter to fully bring out the skull image at the center of the painting.
Recreation of "Saint Jerome"
The original artwork is called "Saint Jerome" created by Lucas van Leyden in 1521 with the media of chalk. When I came across this painting, I had a sense that scratchboard might be able to better bring out the significance of the skull. Thus I cropped the picture to fit my purpose and recreated it with different media.
Flowery Skull
It is a piece of pop art. Once again the image of the skull is the symbol of death but the background is filled with a flowery pattern.
Mask-glass
During the time of COVID, masks become our essentials. It reminds us of the importance of protecting ourselves from getting the virus, but more importantly, I think that mask reminds us how fragile we are. Therefore, I use the masks to create an image of an hourglass which hopes to remind people that our time is limited.
